Emerging Playwrights' Competition

To begin with sad news: most likely at this point you are aware that the Vancouver Playhouse closed its doors a few weeks ago after almost 50 seasons. Solo Collective Theatre has been honoured to share our Emerging Playwrights Competition with the Playhouse over the past several years and we have been endlessly appreciative of their support. We share Vancouverites' sorrow at the loss of this remarkable institution and feel it is a devastating loss for our community (for more information on the fight to save the Vancouver Playhouse please click here). In order to honour the Playhouse and its role in the Emerging Playwrights' Competition, we are moving forward with th is event that celebrates both theatre and theatre-makers in our city.

As such, Solo Collective Theatre is pleased to announce the winners of our 8th annual Emerging Playwrights Competition!

This year's competition received 70 applications from across North America. Mob mentality, mathematics, mistakes, and mail-order matrimony are at the heart of the four pieces selected for future development! Those winning works are:

RAVINE: a scene by Georgina Beaty

COUNTING TO INFINITY: a monologue by Peter Dickinson

A HAMMER FALLS FROM AN APARTMENT WINDOW: a scene by Adam Hunter Collier

THE HUSBAND HUNTING MONOLOGUES: a monologue by Cali Haan

The winning scripts will receive ongoing development and a workshop with dramaturges Amiel Gladstone and Dave Deveau. The pieces will be performed at the SOLO FLIGHTS Showcase on Monday, April 23rd at 8:00pm at Studio 1398, on the third floor of 1398 Cartwright Street on Granville Island in Vancouver.

Company Update

Solo Collective's co-Artistic and Managing Director Rachel Peake is currently interning at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. While there she is working as Assistant Director the musical Wanderlust, written and directed by Morris Panych, and taking part in the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction. Georgina Beaty - Georgina is co-artistic director of Architect Theatre and co-created and performed in Highway 63: The Fort Mac Show, which continues to tour Canada. Writing: Snake’s Hide (BC Buds), Beyond Freedom and Dignity (Next Fest), and Fire Ally (Ignite! (Sage Theatre) and Studio 58). Acting credits include: Le Portrait Gooble (Theatre la Seizieme), The Shape of a Girl (Jessie award), Unity (1918) (Alberta Theatre Projects, Midsummer Night’s Dream (Caravan), And So It Goes, Bone Cage (Downstage), Suspended (Boca del Lupo), Pig (High Performance Rodeo), Queen Lear (Urban Curvz ), Easter and Ah, Wilderness! (Chemainus). Upcoming, Architect Theatre creates their next piece for Theatre Passe Muraille, Fall 2012, The CN Tower Show. Georgina is a graduate of the University of Alberta and Studio 58.

Peter Dickinson - After more than a decade writing about theatre and performance as a Professor of English at SFU, Peter Dickinson has recently begun trying to write for the stage. So far his produced plays include a collaborative work of dance-theatre, The Objecthood of Chairs (SFU Woodward's, 2010), and, coming up this June, a ten-minute piece about racial profiling called Positive ID (InspiraTO Festival, Toronto).

Adam Hunter Collier - I sort of stumbled into writing. It’s led me all over. But I couldn’t afford life away from Toronto. So, I’m back home. I try to do as much community-based work as I can. I love working with people that have special needs (particularly, people with Down’s Syndrome). So I do that. And I’ve also found volunteer roles at CAMH, and with the Boys and Girls Club. Each week, I usually cover a play for a blog my friend runs, that I have been contributing to since its inception a few years ago. That’s been a huge learning experience, which, for the most part, I’ve enjoyed.
