Research
- I
am an evolutionary ecologist interested in conservation and related
questions. My research spans several major fields of life
sciences: ecology, conservation, behaviour and evolution.
Currently, I am working as a post-doctoral research associate at
Project Seahorse, Fisheries Centre, UBC. At Project Seahorse, I
am tackling questions on marine ecology and conservation that have a
direct and tangible application to human well-being. More
specifically, I am interested in the role of marine reserves and other
fisheries management practices in benefiting ecosystems and the local
communities that depend upon these ecosystems.
I moved to Project Seahorse from Simon Fraser University, where I was
working with with Profs. Isabelle Côté and John
Reynolds. Our research focussed on the evolution of mating
systems, life histories (with particular focus on sex change) and
behaviours, their links to the conservation of fishes and marine
communities as well as the effectiveness of fisheries management and
conservation strategies.
In case that was not enough to keep me on my toes, I also study the
genetics and evolution of mixed-mating systems. This research has
focussed on the self-fertilising mangrove killifish, Kryptolebias
marmoratus.
