Fred Popowich received his PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of Edinburgh in 1989, and since then has been a faculty member in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University. He is the Director of the newly created Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics, a joint initiative of Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. He is an Associate Member of the Department of Linguistics, and an Associate Member (and past director) of the Cognitive Science Program.
He is an active in technology commercialization, chaired the committee responsible for Canada’s language technology roadmap, and was co-founder, president, COO and then CTO of Axonwave Software. He is currently a member of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems at the University of British Columbia. He is on the Management Committee of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in the Mathematical and Computational Sciences (IRMACS) and is a member of the Council of Partners for SFU Venture Connection. From time to time, he might spell his name “"Попович".
