These cows raised for milk are often mutilated such tail docking and de-horning. From having two-thirds of their tails removed, the cows are unable to protect themselves from flies and other vectors that are bacteria harboring.

Like their mothers, female calves are raised for the purpose of milk production. Each baby calf is isolated in their individual crates (each calf as about 35 square feet), instead of being nourished by their mothers. Instead of feeding fed the milk produced by their mothers, they are fed formula. This is of course to save the milk for human consumption.
