For my final project I chose to study fractal image compression: a relatively new technique for compressing images based on local self-similarities within an image. My project includes a paper discussing the theory and several techniques, a Microsoft Windows programme that implements a quadtree encoder, and a gallery of before and after images that show typical results obtained from the quadtree heuristic.

The following items are available:

The paper in Microsoft Word format (50 KB) and in HTML format (for online viewing)
The Microsoft Windows programme MAT335prog (1.63 Mb; requires Windows 95 or better)

To install the programme, unzip the file mat335prog.zip into a new folder. Next, create a shortcut to the programme on your desktop or start menu. Double click the icon to start the programme.

The gallery of before and after images

While the programme comes with usage instructions (available from the Help menu), an online version of the usage instructions is also available here.
