Course Prerequisites:
BPK(or Kin) 205 and MBB 201(or MBB 231).
Course Overview:
BPK 310 will focus on the study of human physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic exercise/work. Cardiorespiratory, cellular and metabolic adaptations will be studied in detail.
Course Objectives:
To gain a better understanding of how the body accommodates to the increased demands of acute exercise/work and the mechanism and consequences of adaptation to chronic exercise/work. To discuss these responses, we will require an appreciation of how to assess the physical demands of work and exercise, as well as an understanding of the body's coordinated integration of physiological systems. The influence of external environmental factors such as temperature and altitude on the capacity for these physiological responses will also be discussed.
Structure: One three hour session per week, including lecture and problem based group work.
Text (Required): Brooks; Exercise Physiology, 4th ed 2005.
Additional readings in Custom
Courseware.
Texts available only at downtown bookstore
Grading:
Examinations will be long answer. Assignments are essay/project format.
All assignments and projects will be submitted on paper.
