1. "Open Source for Educational Software Part II" begins March 1!
.......................................................

March 1 - 21, 2001

What is unique and distinctive about "educational" open source? Building on
what we learned in GEN Seminar 14: Open Source for Educational Software, we
will explore specific applications and implementation issues related to
TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence Educational Open Source
initiatives.

Open Source II will be facilitated by a team of individuals involved in
TL*NCE research and development: Marc Belanger, Tom Calvert, Linda Harasim,
Max Luk, and Cindy Xin. Together we will:

- Explore what is or should be unique about Educational Open Source
tools, systems and territory;
- Deepen ongoing discussion and understanding of this new territory;
- Create awareness about actual developments by TL*NCE researchers,
such as the Virtual-U and Open TL Tools;
- Publicize the TL Open Source Launch and create a community of developers
and users.

Community development is crucial. Please join us to share your perspectives,
Ideas, and expertise! Spread the word and get involved!

2. "Support for Faculty" begins March 1
.......................................................

March - 15, 2001

Computer-supported online delivery of courses can enrich and expand
traditional educational activities and enhance outcomes. However, faculty
members interested or assigned to develop online teaching may be discouraged
in their efforts because they perceive a lack of support from their
institutions and peers.

This seminar is facilitated by will by Vivian Merrill, Strategic Consultant,
Instructional Design and Scholarship, for the University of Waterloo's
Centre for Learning and Teaching Through Technology, and Denise Stockley,
Advisor on Teaching and Learning in the Instructional Development Centre at
Queen¹s University.

Together we will explore:
- Issues surrounding pedagogical and technical support and who should be
providing these services;
- Issues concerning the need to further research and scholarship in the
field of instructional uses of technology;
- How we can encourage the long-term adoption of educational technology
beyond the early adopters.

3. Open Source for Educational Software Part I
.......................................................

Our facilitators Bruno Vernier, Griff Richards, Frances Long, and Claudio
Orea guided us down many paths and encouraged us to explore numerous issues
and challenges around open source projects. They also did a remarkable job
of making this complicated topic within reach for so many people, by
encouraging participation from members of varying technical backgrounds, and
in several languages!

Once again, Bruno Vernier has prepared a summary of seminar topics and
resources. (Thanks Bruno, your ongoing contributions to GEN are
appreciated!)

5. Tips for GEN members
.......................................................

As we continue to perform GEN site maintenance, you may be prompted to
provide your username and password twice while being directed to
a new URL. You'll gain access eventually! But we recommend that you update
your bookmarks after logging in to prevent multiple login prompts.

Also, recently you received messages from GEN members that were
inadvertently sent to the entire GEN mailing list. This results when members
use "reply all" to respond to messages sent by the coordinator. We're taking
measures to prevent this from happening in the future. However, we recommend
that you check the TO: area of email messages before clicking that send
button!
