1. Upcoming: 4th D Crossing: Virtual Communities of Educational Practice
.......................................................

April 23 - May 6, 2001

The asynchronous Global Educators Network and synchronous TAPPED IN open
possibilities for comparing virtual communities of educational practice
(CEPs). In 4th D Crossing: Virtual Communities of Educational Practice, the
GEN seminar will be combined with scheduled TAPPED IN guided tours and After
School Online (ASO) sessions. We will experience and reflect on both CEP
models.

TAPPED IN, owned and operated by SRI International, is designed to support
all aspects of K-12 Teachers' Professional Development (TPD), and has more
than 10,000 registered members.

This seminar will be facilitated by Susanne Nyrop, University of Education,
Copenhagen, Denmark. Susanne has been an active member of GEN since its
launch in November, 1999 and volunteers for the TAPPED IN help desk.

Mark your calendar for this GEN seminar and accompanying TAPPED IN sessions:

* 4th D Crossing: Virtual Communities of Educational Practice (CEPs)
0:00am PDT/1:00pm EDT/17:00-18:00 GMT
Join in this brand new series that combines the asynchronous qualities of
the Global Educators' Network (GEN) with the many features of TAPPED IN.
This session will be an introductory discussion of CEPs and the sharing of
personal experiences. Led by Susanne Nyrop, a researcher at the University
of Education in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 24th.

* 4th D Crossing: Graduate Students and CEPs
8:00am PDT/11:00am EDT/15:00-16:00 GMT
This session will be a continuation of the first. Lisette Munneke and Marije
Vanamelsvoort, Ph.D students from Utrecht, Holland, will be sharing their
experiences in this discussion on April 26th.

* 4th D Crossing: Building Community with Parents and Children
10:00am PDT/1:00pm EDT/17:00-18:00 GMT
Jennifer Uecker, an elementary teacher in California and graduate student at
Pepperdine University, will share her experiences on doing research at
TAPPED IN. This discussion will take place on April 30th.

2. GEN Event: Connections 2001 Online
.......................................................

May 1 - 18, 2001

GEN and Connections 2001 conference organizers are collaborating to offer
you an enhancement to the May 5-8 conference in Whistler, British Columbia.
Connections 2001 Online provides an opportunity to share notes, reflect on
sessions, and extend the discussions begun at Connections 2001. This is also
a great opportunity to involve GEN members who are unable to attend
Connections 2001 in person.

Connections 2001, hosted by the Centre for Curriculum, Transfer and
Technology (C2T2), will feature keynote speakers Roman Onufrijchuk of the
Dubai Women's College; Robin Mason of the UK Open University; Murray
Goldberg of the UBC Department of Computer Science; and Steve Dotto, Host
and Co-creator of Dotto's Data Café and Dotto on Data. For more information
about the Connections 2001 conference, visit: http://www.c2t2.ca/c2001

3. Virtual-U Design Special Interest Group
.......................................................

GEN members have identified a need to establish a Special Interest Group
(SIG) to discuss Virtual-U software design and development. This is a place
to make recommendations and respond to ideas for improving Virtual-U.
Together we will make every effort to ensure that Virtual-U software
continues to grow as our needs change!

Access this SIG directly at:

4. Support for Students with Disabilities
.......................................................

Thanks to Catherine Fichten and Jennison Asuncion of the Adaptech Project,
the Support for Students with Disabilities seminar attracted new GEN members
and will remain an important resource for anyone involved in online teaching
and learning. In addition, Kate Britt (PinkFlamingo) has compiled the
references generated through this discussion and dedicated a new page on her
resources site to this topic:
http://www.ibritt.com/reference/accessibility.htm

You are invited to stay involved in this important research. Visit the
Adaptech Project website at http://omega.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/adaptech.

5. Support for Faculty
.......................................................

In this short seminar facilitated by Denise Stockley of Queen's University
and Vivian Rossner-Merrill of University of Waterloo, we shared, compared,
and identified benefits and shortcomings of, current institutional models
for faculty support and professional development.

6. Open Source for Educational Software Part II
.......................................................

In the Open Source II seminar we deepened our understanding of Educational
Open Source, implications for educators and learners, as well as the
challenges ahead in implementing TeleLearning NCE initiatives. We are
certainly witnessing a strong commitment, and it's terrific to watch the
community effort in shaping and realizing an educational open source
project!

This GEN seminar was combined with a 2-day workshop in Vancouver. Thanks to
Griff Richards, full transcripts of the Vancouver workshop can be found on
the TeleLearning Exchange:

7. TOPS: Teaching Online Partnerships and Strategies
.......................................................

Jeff McLaughlin of British Columbia's University College of the Cariboo has
started a new discussion list called TOPS: Teaching Online Partnerships and
Strategies. TOPS was created to facilitate local and international online
partnerships for post-secondary faculty, staff, and administrators who are
interested in collaborating in the development of online courses or
programs. This archived list is an easy and quick way to make, or respond
to, collaboration requests.
