1. November Event: TeleLearning 2001 Online: The Future of (e)Learning
.......................................................
Date: 5 23 November 2001

The 6th Annual TeleLearning 2001 conference will be held November 10 - 13th
in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This year's conference is
co-organized by TeleLearning Network, Inc., and the Canadian Association for
Distance Education. Visit this GEN online complement to the TeleLearning
2001 conference before, during, and after the event to meet delegates, to
share conference highlights, and to summarize and reflect on sessions,
keynotes, demos, and lectures.

Several presenters will be extending the discussions begun at TeleLearning
2001 by leading GEN seminars. Access TeleLearning 2001 Online directly for
details:

2. November Seminar: Practical Web Tools for Educators
.......................................................
Date: 12 19 November 2001
Moderator: Sue Roseman

Discover the many practical (and free!) tools available to help educators in
their classroom and online work. Sue Roseman, an elementary teacher for 25
years, and more recently an Educational Technology Coach with the Ottawa
Centre for Research and Innovation, has collected and reviewed a number of
tools that have proven useful for online educators. Together we will share
tool ideas and resources, and explore how these can be integrated into the
curriculum. Our goal is to construct a Web Toolkit that will remain a
valuable resource for our international community of GEN members.

This seminar will be launched with a 1-hour session at Tapped In
(http://www.tappedin.org), November 12, 9 pm Eastern, 6 pm Pacific.

Beginning November 12, access the seminar directly:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/dspcnf.cgi?ci=128

3. November Seminar: Metadata for Learning Objects
.......................................................
Date: 12 26 November 2001
Moderators: Rory McGreal and Toni Roberts

What is metadata? What does it look like? What do we do with it?

With the emergence of new internationally recognized metadata standards, the
peer-to-peer exchange of learning objects by learners, instructors, and
course developers is becoming possible. Metadata is what makes this happen.

Join Rory McGreal, Cancore Leader and Executive Director of TeleEducation
NB, and Toni Roberts, Manager of the TeleCampus Learning Object Metadata
Repository, for this practical online workshop.

Beginning November 12, access this seminar directly:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/VF_dspcnf.cgi?ci=130

4. November Seminar: TeleTools and Needs Exchange
.......................................................
Date: 19 25 November 2001
Moderators: Michelle Daly and Shawna Reibling

Have you discovered (or created) the perfect tool to assist you in your
online work? Are there tools you need but have yet to unearth?

The TeleTools and Needs Exchange at the TeleLearning 2001 conference offers
an opportunity to share discoveries and queries with others in the eLearning
community.

Conference delegates are invited to post reference information for their
favourite tools, as well as descriptions of their outstanding needs for
tools and/or resources, at the TeleTools and Needs Exchange bulletin board.
The goal of this Exchange is to match tools with needs and to take advantage
of the diverse assembly of telelearners and tele-educators. The results will
then be posted in the GEN TeleTools and Needs seminar and further expanded
after the TeleLearning 2001 conference. All GEN members are encouraged to
participate!

Beginning November 19, access this seminar directly:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/dspcnf.cgi?ci=127

5. November Seminar: Practical Applications of Data Mining
.......................................................
Date: 27 November - 16 December 2001
Moderator: Osmar Zaiane

How could online educators and learners benefit from data mining techniques?
What are the limitations of existing web usage mining applications? How can
these applications be enhanced to help online educators evaluate learning
processes? During this 3-week seminar, Osmar Zaiane, Assistant Professor in
the Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta, will help GEN
members to understand the processes and possibilities of data mining
techniques for web-based learning environments.

Beginning November 27, access this seminar directly:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/dspcnf.cgi?ci=132

6. Upcoming Seminar: Residency in the New Age of Online Learning
.......................................................
Date: 4 - 17 February 2002

Mark you calendars for a seminar topic that will be of particular interest
to administrators, students, and educators. As the Canadian Virtual
University, a partnership of universities across Canada, moves forward with
innovative online university-level course and program delivery, new issues
are surfacing that require rethinking historical policies. This seminar will
engage the post-secondary education community in a discussion that considers
residency requirements.

What are the historical bases of residency? Are these historical bases still
valid in the era of online learning? How is residency impacted by online
learning, and vice-versa? What barriers and protections do residency
requirements offer learners and institutions?

7. CourseReader & VU Connector: New Communication Tools for GEN!
.......................................................

Soon GEN members will have the option of reading and composing GEN seminar
contributions online or offline. CourseReader (CR), developed by TLN NCE's
Virtual-U Project and the International Labour Organization, is open source
NNTP compliant software due for release in November, 2001. An additional
component, CR/VU Connector, enables CourseReader to become an online/offline
reader of the Virtual-U (VU) conferencing system. The Connector shuttles
messages between newsgroups and the web-based VU, allowing GEN members to
read, compose, and manage messages offline, then go online to synchronize
messages.

Learn about additional software features and how to become involved in the
CR community at http://www.coursereader.net.
