1. Webcast & Seminar: Synchronous CMC for Faculty Transition to E-Learning
.......................................................
Dates: 4 - 17 March, 2002
Real-Time Online Interactive Presentation: March 5, 9 am PST, 12 pm EST
Moderator: Michael Power

* What are the differences between synchronous and asynchronous CMC?
* Which is the best transitional mechanism for faculty migration to
e-teaching?
* Which is the ideal tool to enable faculty to quickly prepare for and adapt
to the requirements of e-learning?

With special thanks to HorizonLive <http://www.horizonlive.com> for their
outstanding products and customer support, and to Michael Power for sharing
his expertise in faculty development and course planning for online
delivery, we are excited to offer our first interactive webcast to
complement our GEN seminars!

This presentation and seminar will demonstrate the pedagogical implications,
from a socio-constructivist viewpoint, of using each environment by having
participants actually experience both synchronous and asynchronous online
environments. We will combine a 50-minute presentation, demo, and
synchronous interactive discussion with a 2-week asynchronous follow-up
discussion.

On Tuesday, March 5, 9 am PST, 12 noon EST

2. Upcoming Seminar: Course Reader -- Bringing the Best Educational
Opportunities to Everyone, Everywhere
.......................................................
Date: 18 March - 7 April, 2002
Moderator: Sylvia Currie

Course Reader (CR) is ready for GEN beta testers! CR is open source software
designed to provide free and equitable access to internet-based education
worldwide. Based on Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), CR enables
offline participation in online courses. In this seminar we invite you to
try out Course Reader, share your experiences, suggest enhancements, and
discuss future development and implementation issues.

Beginning 18 March, access the seminar directly:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/VF_dspcnf.cgi?ci=139

3. April Seminar: eTrainerCB Instructional Design and Production Tool
.......................................................
Date: 8 - 28 April 2002
Moderator: Lucio Teles, Shevy Levy

More and more instructors and trainers are faced with the challenges of
designing online courses. And while some learning management systems provide
a comprehensive suite of tools, many fail to support instructors throughout
the necessary steps to designing effective curriculum.

In this GEN seminar you are invited to try out a new instructional design
tool and to share your feedback, and ideas for integrating this tool into
practice. TELEStraining's eTrainerCB Course Builder
<http://www.telestraining.com> is an instructional design and production
tool for creating online courses and modules. eTrainerCB integrates
instructional design templates, has a built-in Web authoring tool, and
exports content to any learning management system platform.

4. New SIG: Welcome all Webheads!
.......................................................

GEN extends a special welcome to Webheads, a community of online language
teachers and learners who have been meeting regularly in various
cyber-venues since 1998. Webheads will use GEN as one of their meeting
places, and are invited to share their experiences in a future GEN seminar
on online language learning.

5. Sex, Gender, and Online Education
.......................................................

During this 5-week seminar Cher Hill provided GEN members an opportunity to
critically examine the roles of sex and GENder in online classrooms and to
collectively establish strategies for developing more equitable learning
environments.

A seminar summary is available at:
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/cgi-bin/VG/VF_dspmsg.cgi?ci=135&mi=125

6. Residency in the New Age of Online Learning
.......................................................

In this 2-week seminar, organized in collaboration with Canadian Virtual
University <http://www.cvu-uvc.ca>, GEN members engaged in a very focused
discussion on issues related to residency requirements in universities and
colleges. Contributions will be summarized for an upcoming Canadian
Association of Distance Education <http://www.cade-aced.ca> Conference panel
presentation, as well as in a report to Industry Canada.

The seminar is archived at:
