| Dear SIA@SFU visitor, |
SIA@SFU (Science in Action at Simon Fraser University) is an innovative program organized by the Chemistry Department at Simon Fraser University that offers a science immersion day in the Faculty of Science at SFU at no cost to your school. The program targets high school students who may have limited exposure to the sciences. It also allows students to see the important role that women play in science. The students spend the day interacting with real scientists at the undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral, technician, and faculty level and are given hands-on exposure to science in real laboratories. A science oriented lunch, courtesy of SIA@SFU, provides food for thought and growing bodies.
SIA@SFU can work with you to ensure that your students receive hands-on training with material that fits within your current curriculum. Subjects ranging from chemistry to biology to physics can be combined to suit your needs. This science immersion day introduces students to innovative research and environmentally sustainable science – for example, there is an emphasis on green chemistry in the laboratory (water is the only solvent we use for student experiments) and we do not expose the students to any potentially toxic materials.
Our goal is to create a positive science experience for students and teachers who come to SIA@SFU, and to encourage students to develop an interest in science that will serve them well throughout their lives. To book a day with SIA@SFU, please register your class by clicking on the enrollment tab above.
