Idling trucks bug me...
I got into an email discussion on my building's mailing list this afternoon. The issue was the smell (and noise) coming from idling vehicles on the street below. After I did that I had a couple of other people comment, in person and via email, that they, too, were concerned about air quality from idling trucks outside the building.I think this merits a comment to the city, and I wonder if anyone out there knows who would be the right person to contact at the City of Vancouver regarding "idling" initiatives. The city of Calgary, I know, has a "no idling" bylaw already.
This also comes to a head this evening because I was walking home via Hastings & Burrard. Or, rather, I was trying to walk home through there.
The city has rented the entire corner out to a movie set and pedestrians are not welcome. Anyway, not only are there those giant generator things - inevitable, I don't imagine that we can get rid of those - but many, many idling vehicles of all types and descriptions. Some probably have to run to support their flashers and what not, but some just seemed to be idling for no good reason. In particular, a huge pickup truck with one guy sitting in it, was idling by the curb. I suppose so he could sit and listen to the radio and wait to be called to do something.
I don't want to sound like a crank on this, but it really is noxious and noisy and it is completely unnecessary most of the time. Since the city already requires these movie crews to hire lots of extra police to stand around and look important, why don't they ask them to stroll past the vehicles and ask people if they really NEED to be idling?
Grumble.
