Weekly Log

[Week 2]: Our team discussed the ideas for the final. I drew out a rough storyboard so we could see eye to eye about the project.

[Week 3]: I finish drawing and inking the storyboard. During this week, colour is gradually being added. I start doing some quality checking on the images and add text to some panels as a second rough storyboard.

[Week 4]: Checked with project head (Kurtis) about storyboard layout. Looks like everything's going well so far, so it's off to make the final storyboard. I have also started on some modelling of the butterfly that appears near the end of the short, but I will switch to modelling the coat rack, which appears earlier

[Week 5]: Modelled about 95% of the coat rack. I’m finding the arms of the coat rack hard to model. Getting them to look bendable without the striations is getting to be a problem. I have applied the smooth tool to it many, many times, but nothing seems to make the striations disappear. I think I may have to redo this part of the coat rack. I’ll start working on the rest of the models soon.

[Week 6]: Finished the rough models of the coat rack, butterfly, fountain pen and clock. They need tonnes more detail but at least a big chunk of them is finished for the animatic. I have started remodelling and smoothing out the clock so that its edges look less sharp and hexagonal-like.

[Week 7]: The small details of the clock are still being worked out. Now, I have started modelling the fountain pen. It is looking good thus far (though these striations still show up). I have started looking for textures for the models.

[Week 8]: I have started progress on the butterfly. I lofted some curves to make up its wings (many many times over). My major complaint is that the lofting makes the curves look a little ‘pinched’ at some areas. I have taken this out by switching it to “faces” deleting these areas.

[Week 9]: We have passed on our models to Carmen for texturing (good luck!). I have started working on the images that flash in the guy’s memories. I drew a sketch of a girl in dress, holding a balloon. There are puffy clouds, mountains and the ocean behind her. The colouring will be done in Photoshop.

[Week 10]: The colouring is taking awhile. In the meantime, I have drawn a sketch of a three-person family. This is supposed to represent the man, his wife and his daughter (who appears much younger here than in the previous picture with the ocean and the bridge).

[Week 11]: Work has been started for the third and fourth images in the guy’s memories. One will be a hillside with many clouds and a bright blue sky behind it. The other will likely be another scenery image, though I would like to do an image with a living subject in it.

[Week 12]: The final image of a baby playing with blocks has been started. This is to show the man as a child.
