STATISTICAL ASSOCIATE

 

The Department of Population Health Research with Alberta Health Services – Cancer Care has a position open for a temporary full-time Statistical Associate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Our team of six Research Scientists is engaged in cutting-edge population-based cancer research including etiology, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening, health services and biostatistics. Some current studies focus on: the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survival; endogenous and exogenous hormones in the etiology of reproductive cancers; knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the public and health professionals regarding cancer screening procedures; the study of and adjustment for diet and physical activity related measurement error and statistical methods for studies involving genetic data. With the addition of our Chair in Molecular Epidemiology and anticipation of recruiting a Chair in Biostatistics, we are analyzing more complex and often high throughput biological data.  The Statistical Associate is part of an established research support team that includes other MSc trained statisticians, a PhD trained biostatistician, MSc. trained epidemiologists, database and data collection programmers. This is a full time 12 months temporary position subject to renewal.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will work on a variety of epidemiology research studies and will typically work on more than one concurrent task. Independent judgment, attention to detail and problem-solving skills will be essential in performing the job duties, which include:
 
·         conduct basic and advanced statistical analyses, including application of techniques such as survival data analysis, logistic regression, and multivariate methods;
·         prepare written summaries of data analyses which include figures and tables, as needed for scientific publications and presentations;
·         conduct logical checks on new data bases, making and logging corrections;
·         document data analysis steps;
·         program and/or implement new statistical methods;
·         manipulate large, complex data sets.
 
As part of ongoing professional development, the Statistical Associate will also have access to a support and educational network including working collaboratively with researchers and other statisticians, access to SAS User Groups, and monthly meetings with other research-based staff to discuss statistical and research ideas. They will have opportunities for further continuing education, such as attending software programming or methods workshops.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Master’s degree in Biostatistics or Statistics;
·         minimum one year experience applying statistical analysis methods in health setting;
·         A. Stat. or P. Stat. Accreditation is desirable;
·         proficient in SAS (SAS Certification an asset), with knowledge of Stata and/or R an asset;
·         excellent communication skills including advanced written and spoken English skills;
·         ability to work collaboratively with members of an interdisciplinary team;
·         knowledge and experience with statistical genetics analysis software is an asset.
