Responsibilities

Reporting to the Capital Health District Chief of Community Health & Epidemiology (scientifically) and to the Director, Research Services administratively), the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team in the design of clinical studies and other health research using a variety of research methods, building a core team of senior consultants and analysts, consulting with, advising and allocating methodological support to Capital Health and other Maritime researchers, collaborating with Capital Health and other Maritime researchers to prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer- reviewed journals, and preparing proposals on external research funding, mentoring junior investigators and scientific staff, and ensuring the quality and rigor of scientific work.


Responsibilities include:

1. To promote clinical and health research through the development of necessary and shared infrastructure including data management facilities and methodological support in epidemiology, clinical trials, health economics, health services research, qualitative techniques, and statistics.


2. To create a training environment that develops core competencies of new investigators, promotes on-going development of existing researchers and fosters opportunities for mentoring.


3. To create opportunities for interaction among researchers with complementary expertise leading to greater interdisciplinary collaboration among investigative teams and cross-fertilization of research ideas and methods.

4. To provide means of translating knowledge into practice.


The Research Methods Unit will be dedicated to creating, evaluating and disseminating evidence-based knowledge that leads to the improvement of health and more efficient delivery of health care in the Capital Health District, Nova Scotia and the Maritimes.

 
Qualifications

o    MSc or PhD (preferred) in biostatistics, statistics, clinical epidemiology or heath economics

 

Skills and Experience

o    Minimum of 5 years post doctoral experience in designing and performing research in a clinical research environment

o    Administrative oversight experience required

o    Supervisory experience required

o    Demonstrated self starter, leader and decision maker

o    Experience in scientific proposal writing

o    Demonstrated success at obtaining grant funding as a principal investigator, co-investigator and collaborator

o    A track record of publications in peer-reviewed health journals

o    Excellent verbal and written communication skills

o    Ability to work to deadlines and within budget

o    Strong quantitative skills and experience in the development and design of research studies, data analysis and interpretation of study results

o    Demonstrated ability to concurrently manage multiple projects

o    Demonstrated ability to find innovative solutions to complex problems

o    Demonstrated ability to identify clear objectives and to develop tasks that meet those objectives

o    Demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams of individuals and individual research staff

o    Commitment to contributing to the education component of the Research Methods Unit and to mentoring of junior staff and trainees

o    Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with a broad range of individuals and teams, to move research forward

Hours of Work

Long assignment full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
Beginning July 1, 2010 until July 1, 2015.

Salary

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The qualified candidate will receive a faculty appointment at Dalhousie University. This position is funded by institutional funds and is not dependent on grant support.
