Open Position in Actuarial Science
The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo invites
applications for a tenure-track or tenured position in Actuarial Science. This may be at the rank of
Assistant, Associate, or, in very special cases, Full Professor. Candidates must have a PhD in an
area of the actuarial, statistical or mathematical sciences, and research interests in actuarial
science or related disciplines. Professional actuarial qualifications and experience, although not
strictly necessary, would be a distinct asset. Applicants must also have potential or proven ability to
develop an internationally recognized research program, excellent communication skills, and a
strong commitment to teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The University of Waterloo is one of Canada’s leading universities with more than 30,000 full and
part-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of Statistics and
Actuarial Science is one of the top academic units for the statistical and actuarial sciences in the
world and is home to more than 40 research active full-time faculty. It offers a vibrant research
environment for a wide range of areas including mathematical statistics, analysis of longitudinal and
event history data, statistical learning, finance, risk management, ruin theory, survey methods,
industrial statistics, and interdisciplinary collaborative work. The Department benefits from close
relationships with several research groups on campus including the Waterloo Research Institute in
Insurance, Securities, and Quantitative Finance (WATRISQ). The Department is also home to more
than 150 graduate students in programs including Actuarial Science, Statistics and Biostatistics.
The Department has the distinct feature of offering both Masters and PhD degrees in Actuarial
Science, including the professional Master of Actuarial Science, which delivers an elite, fast-tracked
education in actuarial science and practice. Departmental strengths in the actuarial science group
cover a wide range of topics including risk and ruin theory, quantitative finance, risk management in
insurance and finance, solvency management, financial modeling, and computational methods. The
University of Waterloo is also designated as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of
Actuaries, and was on the inaugural list of universities fully accredited by the Canadian Institute of
Actuaries.

have a PhD in Biostatistics or a related area in the statistical or mathematical sciences, a
potential or proven ability to develop an internationally recognized research program in

Interested candidates from any area of Biostatistics are strongly encouraged to apply. Current
areas of specialization of the department in Biostatistics include the analysis of longitudinal

Lecturer Position in Actuarial Science
The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications
for a three-year definite-term lecturer position in Actuarial Science, to be held jointly with an
appointment as Director of the Master of Actuarial Science program. Candidates must have a PhD
in an area of the actuarial, statistical or mathematical sciences, and research interests in actuarial
science or related disciplines. Professional actuarial qualifications at the fellowship level and
industry experience are highly desirable. Applicants must also have excellent communication skills
and a strong commitment to teaching. Following the initial 3-year term, a subsequent appointment
as continuing lecturer may be possible.
The Master of Actuarial Science (M.Act.Sc.) is an elite program that was launched in 2009. It
delivers an intensive, fast-tracked education in actuarial science and practice, and is accredited by
the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. As Director of the M.Act.Sc.
program, the successful candidate will be expected to lead and oversee the continuing development
of the program, further its connections with the industry, promote it nationally and internationally,
and recruit students of the highest quality.
