                     Statistical Associate position
Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research is a research-intensive
department of CancerControl Alberta whose Research Scientists are
conducting cutting-edge population-based cancer research in the etiology
and prevention of cancer. Their research spans the disciplines of
molecular and genetic cancer epidemiology, nutritional and physical
activity epidemiology, and bio-statistics. Some current studies focus on:
the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and
survival; role of vitamin D in colorectal cancer recurrence; estimation of
population attributable risks for modifiable lifestyle factors; the study
of and adjustment for diet and physical activity related measurement error
and statistical methods for studies involving genetic data. An emerging
area of research interest within the group is the study of biomarkers,
including inflammatory, metabolomics, and hormones, as markers of various
exposure, health and disease states.

Job Description:
The Department of Cancer Prevention and Epidemiology Research within
Alberta Health Services – CancerControl has a new position open for a
Statistical Associate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This position is a
full-time 12 month temporary position subject to renewal. The Statistical
Associate will be part of an established research support team that
includes four other MSc-trained biostatisticians, three MSc-trained
epidemiologists, and four data management specialists. Career advancement
opportunities are available within our team for individuals who
demonstrate interest and ability to work at advanced technical and
leadership levels. As part of ongoing professional development, the
Statistical Associate will also have access to a support and educational
network including working collaboratively with researchers and other
statisticians, access to a SAS User Group, and monthly meetings with other
research-based staff to discuss statistical and research ideas. They will
have opportunities for further continuing education, such as attending
software programming or methods workshops, weekly seminars and rounds,
journal clubs and other professional development opportunities.

Required Skills:
The successful candidate will work on a variety of cancer epidemiologic
research studies and will work on several concurrent tasks/projects.
Independent judgment, attention to detail, ability to learn new methods
and strong problem-solving skills will be essential in performing the job
duties that include:

- conducting basic and advanced statistical analysis, including
application of techniques such as survival data analysis, logistic
regression, and multivariate methods;
- preparing written summaries of data analysis which include figures and
tables, as needed for scientific publications and presentations;
- conducting data quality checks on new SQL databases, making and logging
corrections;
- documenting data analysis steps;
- programming and/or implementing new statistical methods primarily in SAS;
- manipulating large and complex data sets.

All Management and Out Of Scope positions are being reviewed for possible
inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. If this
position is impacted, the incumbent will be notified accordingly.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Biostatistics or Statistics;
- Minimum one year experience applying statistical analysis methods in a
health setting;
- A. Stat. or P. Stat. Accreditation is desirable;
- Proficient in SAS (SAS Certification an asset), with knowledge of R
and/or Stata an advantage;
- Excellent communication skills including advanced written and spoken
English skills;
- Ability to work collaboratively with members of an interdisciplinary team;
- Knowledge and experience with epidemiological studies or biomarker data
is an asset.
