Do you want to be part of a vibrant and collegial community of world-class statisticians and mathematicians?
The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students. It is the only Australian University to have been rated well above world standard (5) in the Mathematical Sciences in all three Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation exercises to date.
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is home to 69 academic staff with a support team of 10 professional staff. Our research interests include a broad spectrum of mathematical sciences and their applications. We attract outstanding undergraduate students including many talented students who go on to higher degrees. The large cohort of postgraduate research students and they and our many overseas visitors benefit from, and help to sustain, an outstanding research environment.
We are currently seeking to appoint four accomplished academics to the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to further strengthen our research standing and to strategically grow in the areas of statistics and financial mathematics. We will be appointing two statisticians and two academics with expertise in financial mathematics or statistics. People with research interests in other areas can apply but are unlikely to be considered unless they are so outstanding that a strong case for appointing them can be made independently of the current positions.
To succeed, you will be a talented and well-qualified mathematical scientist with expertise in an area that strengthens the school's profile and/or contributes strategically to University activities. You will need to have appropriate skills and qualifications as outlined in the position description, including a PhD in mathematics or statistics or equivalent area.
If appointed, you will be expected to undertake duties consistent with an appointment at the Lecturer / Senior Lecturer level (Level B/C) on the Australian academic scale (roughly equivalent to a tenure-track Assistant Professor / Associate Professor position in the North American system). This will include: publishing scholarly papers in international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students; teaching a range of courses to undergraduate students; and applying for external funding.
If you are interested in joining our school but are already at a higher level of appointment then we encourage you to send your resume directly to the Head of School at email@example.com as a starting point for a conversation.
Late applications will be accepted but cannot be guaranteed consideration.
All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
