The Education Analytics Branch in the Ministry of Education enables the K-12 sector in B.C. to be a world leader in the use of education data to support program and strategic planning, system performance and quality delivery of personalised education. The Branch oversees the management, security and stewardship of education data and client services. The Analysis and Reporting Unit is responsible for reporting on education system performance through online visualizations through the Ministry’s reporting web platform, reports, information and analysis; data collection enhancements via the student data exchange; contributing to enhancements to the Education Data Warehouse; student learning survey; data requests and releases (e.g. government partners, legislated representatives such as RCY and FNESC, and researchers); and data visualizations and analysis.
The Senior Database Research Officer develops and implements technical solutions to identify, and summarize for various audiences, the key information and trends that impact student achievement. As well as the Ministry and other government organizations, external organizations and researchers use the results of this work to improve understanding of the educational system and service delivery. The incumbent will spend the majority of time providing expert consultation on technical requirements for the ministry’s data needs, manipulating large data sets within a data warehouse environment, reviewing data sets for quality and consistency, and summarizing data for diverse audiences utilizing data visualization tools and visualization dashboards. Additionally, the position works with ministry program areas, management, professional and administrative staff and external contractors to support data-driven decisions across the entire K-12 system. The Senior Database Research Officer plays a lead role in the on-going maintenance of the current Education Data Warehouse (EDW) and in the development of an improved infrastructure and data model.
Qualifications for this role include:
· Bachelor’s Degree in statistics, mathematics, public or business administration or social science field, or equivalent. · Minimum two years of experience with SQL programming. · Minimum two years of experience with relational and/or object data modeling, data analysis, data warehousing techniques, data management principles, structured analysis and design.
