Subject: [cmath] Assistant Professor – Actuarial Data Analytics - University of Calgary
Assistant Professor – Actuarial Data Analytics
The University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, to start on or after 1st July 2019.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking an outstanding candidate with a Ph.D. in an area of the mathematical and statistical sciences, and with research and teaching interests in the interface between Actuarial Science and Data Science.
Duties include undergraduate and graduate teaching in Actuarial Science and Data Science, supervision of graduate students, and the development of an independent research program.
This position is in support of Actuarial Science instruction and research, so a candidate's expertise in Actuarial Science and/or closely related statistical areas of activity is essential, and we are especially interested in candidates who have research interests in data science, big data or predictive analytics problems.
The ideal candidate will have a professional actuarial designation (Associate or Fellow) or be actively working towards such in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Society of Actuaries, or Casualty Actuarial Society. An Associateship or Fellowship designation in at least one of these bodies must be obtained prior to tenure and promotion consideration.
The ideal candidate will also have a proven record of research, good communication skills, and demonstrated quality teaching ability. Peer-reviewed external funding is normally expected to be sustained throughout the appointment, and industrial partnerships are strongly encouraged where appropriate. The position includes both teaching and research responsibilities, and an expectation to recruit and supervise graduate students. Successful applicants will be enthusiastic about contributing to both teaching and research.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop a vigorous and independent externally-funded research program within a dynamic and collaborative environment. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package are available. The candidate will be expected to apply for extramural support from national/provincial agencies to sustain their research program.
The University of Calgary has several new Data Science initiatives, including a new undergraduate Minor program, and a professional graduate program that started in the Fall of 2018. At the moment this constitutes a Certificate followed by a Diploma, and we anticipate that a full Professional Master's program will be ready to come into operation within the next two years. The program has active involvement from Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, the Haskayne School of Business and the Cumming School of Medicine.
The Actuarial Science program at the University of Calgary is one of the largest in Western Canada. It encompasses both an undergraduate degree and a (new) Actuarial Science specialization in our graduate (MSc and PhD) programs. The University of Calgary is fully accredited by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
In addition to contributing to these initiatives, the successful candidate will have opportunities for collaboration within the department with researchers in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, and Mathematical Finance, and more widely with data science researchers across campus.
How to apply
Interested candidates should submit applications electronically through MathJobs.org. Applications should include: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, a statement of teaching experience and philosophy. Each applicant should also arrange to have four letters of recommendation, one of which addresses teaching, uploaded to the MathJobs website.
The submitted material should provide evidence of excellence in research and teaching. Evidence for research excellence may comprise publications in top ranked and field-relevant academic journals, presentations at top conferences, research awards and accolades, and exceptional endorsements by referees of top international stature. Evidence for excellence in teaching may comprise positive teaching accomplishments and accolades, strong letters of reference and teaching evaluations, and a teaching dossier. Evidence of a professional actuarial designation or active progress towards such may comprise details about the designation achieved, or requirements towards such achieved to date.
Questions may be addressed to the Search Committee by emailing email@example.com.
The review of applications will begin on February 24, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.
