The CHI, which was established as a partnership between the University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, brings together leaders and practitioners from all disciplines in academia and practice to ensure that the latest research and evidence are translated into improvements to care and outcomes for patients and citizens of Manitoba. The goal of the CHI is to challenge and innovate the delivery of healthcare in Manitoba. Specific responsibilities of the Biostatistician position include: · Provide statistical consulting services; · Collaborate with health researchers on health-focused research projects; · Conduct methodological research in one's areas of expertise; · Develop methodological curriculum and lead training sessions on research design and statistical analysis techniques; · Train and mentor junior statisticians/data analysts and students; · Participate in strategic planning for the Data Science Platform and the CHI. The successful candidate will devote 80% of his/her time to collaborative and applied research and training and 20% of his/her time to independent methodological research in his/her area of expertise. · A PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, or a closely-related discipline with at least 2 years of relevant experience in statistical consulting or leadership in data analysis in a health research environment; · Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary research teams; · Strong problem solving and decision making skills; · Experience in applying machine learning, statistical modeling, or optimization algorithms to complex medical, biological or health administrative data sets would be preferred, although expertise in any area of statistics or biostatistics will be considered; · Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and time management skills; · Ability to maintain professionalism, diplomacy, and tact under high pressure situations; · Demonstrated ability to produce peer-review publications and prepare competitive research funding applications; · Good knowledge of the real-world application of statistical methods for design of clinical studies and analysis of clinical data would be as asset; · Skills in working with observational data, particularly large healthcare administrative databases, would be an asset; · Expertise in either SAS or R software; expertise with both would be an asset; · Experience with Python scripting language for analyzing structured and unstructured data would be an asset. The Data Science Platform within the CHI comprises more than 25 faculty, staff, and trainees (post-docs, PhD, MSc, undergraduate) working together and with our clients and collaborators to facilitate the development, management, analysis, and linkage of clinical, biological, administrative, and other data resources for patient-oriented research. The Data Science Platform works closely with the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, the University of Manitoba's Department of Statistics, the University of Winnipeg’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Manitoba Health, Manitoba's health regions, and other national, provincial, and regional agencies and organizations. The Platform is home to the NSERC-funded Visual and Automated Disease Analytics (VADA) graduate training program and the Manitoba Statistical and Health Sciences Collaborating Centre, which is supported by the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute. The Biostatistics Group within the Data Science Platform provides statistical leadership and serves as a resource on statistical consulting for clinicians, researchers, and trainees. The Biostatistics Group is comprised of PhD- and MSc-trained individuals with expertise in theoretical and applied statistics in such areas as longitudinal data analysis, mixture models, measurement error models, graphical techniques, time-to-event models, biological species diversity, biomarker discovery, development and validation, and disease risk prediction.
