FamilyEightiesStyle

I am a Professor in the Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University, where this site is hosted.

I am currently very heavily involved in astronomy outreach for the public, including in the development of the Trottier Observatory and Science Courtyard at SFU (currently under construction), and in running the popular outreach program Starry Nights @ SFU. I'm very grateful for the recognition of my teaching and outreach activities by the Canadian Astronomical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and SFU's University Committee for the Excellence in Teaching Awards. My research is in the theory of subatomic particles, and I've authored or co-authored 50 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including a series with the High Precision QCD (HPQCD) Collaboration. Among other highlights, I served as Chair of the Subatomic Physics Grant Selection Committee (GSC-19) of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), for the 2008-9 competition. I have also sat on numerous administrative bodies at SFU, including the Faculty Council, the University Board on Student Discipline, and the University Tenure Comitteee.

This web site contains some information on my research in the theory of elementary particles, also known as high energy physics, my teaching and public outreach activities, and a little background on my other professional and personal interests.

In addition to my research, there are seveal other, and for me equally important, subtexts to my use of "high energy" to describe this site. I invest as much of myself in teaching physics as I do in my research, and consider teaching and public outreach to be job#1. I also devote myself to an exploration of the cosmos as an avid amateur astronomer, and in trying to share the beauty of the night sky with others, which continues a passion that goes back to my early teenage years, and which is what got me into science.

But family and friends are far, far and away my highest-energy component!

The buttons on the left link to pages which detail my research and teaching activities, my publications and talks (both scientific and outreach), give some information on the work done by the students that I have supervised, and highlight my pursuits as an amateur astronomer. I also give a little more on my personal groove, including some accounts of my long-distance bike trips with my brother Elliot (still to come).
