the context

TEDxSFU is an independently organized local group comprised of passionate students and alumni volunteers at Simon Fraser University who are dedicated to ideas worth spreading. Every year, TEDxSFU hosts a conference for the SFU community where a diverse group of speakers share stories and insights from their areas of expertise.

The leap we took

(AKA The Opportunity)

With the annual theme “take the leap”, the team decides to take the leap by minimizing the unnecessary paper waste from printed materials. Reasons being: First, this would save us at least $2,000 on printing, while we could use the money to get better food for audience. Second, we would also like to reduce the amount of waste produced as most of the printed program guides from previous years end up being thrown out. Third, over 80% of TEDxSFU 2015 attendees are young adults aged between 18-30 who spend at least 2 hours on their digital devices every day, making it easier to deliver the program guides digitally.

the work

I lead the creative team in focusing on creating the digital products which not only promotes the event, but also maximizes the audience experience during the event. The work I was involved with includes the redesigning of the official website, the usability testing and interface design of digital program guide, visual design and video production of event promotion.

1. A responsive official website that elaborates the conference theme and showcases previous talks.

2. A digital program guide that covers all the detailed information needed for the event day, including the schedule, speakers, lunch menu, etiquette, and more.

3. Working closely with the Marketing & PR directors, I was also in charge of the majority of event promotion graphics/videos on social media channels, materials needed for sponsors, speakers, and attendees of the conference day.

  • Below please enjoy some of my work!

  • Theme Logo &Business card
  • Sponsorship Package
  • Left to right:
food menu poster of the event day,
conference theme poster, past speaker's poster
  • Graphics for social media

  • Conference T-shirt design
  • Attendees Nametags

the result

The continuous release of promotional videos and graphics on social media channels received over 3,500 hits within two weeks and drove early-bird tickets to sell out for the first time. The event received a lot of exposure through the reports of multiple media sources, such as the City of Vancouver and Daily Hive, which resulted in getting a full-house of attendees during the event day.
