Ubuntu is a free distribution of the GNU/Linux Operating System that is designed to be especially easy to use for people who have very little or no previous experience with GNU/Linux. It can be downloaded from the Ubuntu website as a ".iso" file that can then be burnt to a CD for installation. Installation is very easy, even if you wish to create a dual-boot system, where you can boot to Ubuntu or Windows on the same machine.
I highly recommend this Operating System, and I use it myself for 99% of the things I need to do on my computer.
