Zero Flow:
A PUB (Predictions in Ungauged Basins) Workshop on Intermittent Streams

February 23 – 25, 2011
Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club
Drumheller, AB

In more arid regions of Canada, streams contain water only during restricted periods of the year. The controls on whether water is present or not result from the complex interaction between energy and water availability, soils and vegetation, and landscape and climate. These interactions are understudied in many regions but particularly in Canada where the focus often is to more water rich areas. Improving the measurement, prediction and management of water flux and availability is important to the economic and environmental sustainability of these areas.

This workshop will bring together scientists and managers who are engaged in understanding these systems, how they respond to changes in climate and land-use, and in transferring this understanding to predictions in ungauged basins. This PUB workshop will summarize the state of knowledge about monitoring, modelling, and management of these intermittent stream systems. Workshop sessions will give participants the opportunity to engage in defining the shortcomings in our present understanding and data collection and analysis, and to develop the research questions necessary to meet future water management needs.

A special journal issue is planned, which will include invited papers and syntheses of workshop sessions. This volume will support the growth of collaborative research on these stream systems.
