Neolithic Flint Mines

Stone was quarried and mined and traded over considerable distances during the Neolithic. In southern and eastern England flint was mined from chalk bedrock by sinking shafts into the ground and digging galleries which radiated out from the base of the shaft. The filled-in shafts are known from many sites. At Grimes Graves, in eastern England, one shaft has been left open for visitor access.
