BRIDGE

This example of masterful engineering is the drawbridge located behind Machu Picchu. It is constructed along a sheer cliff face by building up stones for a good thirtyfive meters, the tips of the fir tress are visible half way up the Inka built bridge. This bridge must have been built for security reasons. Following the line of vegetation across the bridge it is possible to make out the remnants of an overgrown trail leading to a lookout. From this strategic position any one approaching the city can seen, and a runner could warn the inhabitants of Machu Picchu, pulling back the draw bridge and preventing anyone else from crossing. The city of Machu Picchu is approachable only from two directions; one from the river below where the train now runs, the other from along the Inka Trail that the bridge and lookout command.
