THE DANZANTES

The Danzante bas-reliefs were carved into the stone structures decorating the Danzante Mound during Monte Alban I. Danzante is Spanish for dancers, which the contorted figures were thought to be. Archeologists today consider them to be tortured prisoners, enemies of the rulers at Monte Alban during its early development and formation as a unified Zapotec State in Oaxaca.
