THE MYSTERIOUS BUILDING "J"

This structure is strangely out of place with the rest of Monte Alban's architecture. Where the city is built on a north-south axis, this building is out of alignment, and its platform is in the shape of an arrow. It has long been suggested that this structure served as an observatory. It would make sense for the alignment of Building J to be associated with making astronomical observations. The Zapotecs had a 260-day sacred almanac, on which ritual observation were based. Particular attention was paid to the positioning of Venus. Perhaps the arrow shaped platform is pointing to Venus, whose alignment signifies an important event in the Zapotec Almanac.
