OVER VIEW

Palenque consists of several temples, palaces and buildings of various functions. This view is from the Temple of the Cross, south west of the Palace and featured on the right side of the image. The temple on the left is the Temple of Inscriptions. Within the archaeological zone are several more temples, a vaulted aqueduct, a ball court and of course the tourist museum. Less than half the site has been excavated, only 20 out of 300 mounds. Moving northwest from the Palace is a series of residential housing mounds and a beautiful set of natural pools, which we will see shortly. Visitors to the site can hike off into the jungle surrounding Palenque and find various crumbled and overgrown buildings. These lost remnants of the Maya city have an eerie beauty and sense of mystery that intrigues the mind and the heart.
