TEMPLE OF INSCRIPTION:

front view

Pacal erected the Temple of Inscription in AD 692. Originally the temple had eight stories of platforms, which was later converted into the pyramid we see today. Stucco reliefs of human figures guard the temple doorways. Inside the temples are panel after panel of hieroglyphs relating the history of Palenque. Only a handful of people are able to read Mayan hieroglyphs today, but dictionaries have been created so that the written language will not be forgotten. When the Spanish conquered Mexico the priests burned most of the Mayan books, though a few, such as the Pophl Vul, still exist.
