TEMPLE OF THE SUN

The Temple of the Sun was erected around the seventh century. This temple is located between the Palace and the Temple of the Foliated Cross, on the eastern side of Otolum River. The preservation of the roof comb on this temple exemplifies the distinctly Mayan architecture. In the interior of the Temple of the Sun are panels depicting priests making offering to the sun; a shield and two lances symbolize the sun. This picture shows the terraced earth structures that the temples were built upon. Generally the terraces are solid, though some have interior burial chambers. The sheltered structure to the left of the temple is errected by conservators to protect the preservation and restoration of a stucco relief.
