PUERTA DEL SOL

The Puerta Del Sol, or the Gateway of the Sun, is constructed from a single piece of gray andesite rock. This monolithic portal is carved with numerous sculptures of the Staff God, also referred to as the Gateway God. Notice the puma mouth and serpent ray headdress indicative of sun imagery. During summer solstice the rising sun shines through the gateway, likely signifying an important religious and agricultural event. The designs carved into the Gateway are said to record events of the distant past, and function as an astronomical calendar. However archaeological research has not substantiated this.
