Joe Hepburn's research is focused on the use of stable isotope analyses for life-history reconstruction in forensic human identification.

More broadly, he is interested in missing persons and unidentified remains investigations, GIS methods, photographic documentation, and the study of paleodiet and paleomobility using stable isotopes.
