General Info

There is more information on the Degree Completion section at the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies webpage.

  • Check your student record to ensure that you have completed all required coursework for the degree.
  • Check your financial account to ensure all outstanding fees have been paid.
  • Read the information on the following websites:
  • Apply to graduate (this is not an application for convocation)

Note: Title changes are not permitted after your defence.

Reminder: The forms do require a signature from each committee member and the supervisor. If they are not available in-person, an email confirmation stating if they believe the thesis is ready for defence, and if they will attend in-person or online, is required.

Masters Students (Including Heritage Resource Management)

Provide your Graduate Program Assistant with the following:

5-6 weeks before your defence:

  • Ensure you're registered in ARCH 898 (Thesis Course)
  • Date and time
  • Preferred location
  • Thesis title
  • List of supervisory committee
  • Information for External Examiner (generally your Supervisor will provide this)
(Note: If the External Examiner is not from SFU, a 2-page bio is required, as well as their phone and email contact.)
  • Any ethics or animal care approvals (if required)
  • Please remember to apply to graduate!

This information should be provided as early as possible, as sometimes it's difficult to track people down for signatures. The form this is used for is the "Approval of Examining Committee" form from Graduate Studies.

4 weeks before your defence (absolute deadline):

  • Copy of Thesis to your Graduate Program Assistant for dispersal
  • Copy of your abstract for advertising
  • A/V requirements and any Skype info as required

Your defence:

  • Bring yourself, your computer, and your presentation. The Graduate Program Assistant will set up any Skype connections as required.

After the defence:

  • Follow the directions your supervisor and committee have given you regarding any changes to be made to the final copy of your thesis
  • Your Graduate Program Assistant will provide a signed copy of your Approval Page that will need to be uploaded with your thesis
  • Your Graduate Program Assistant will also provide a signed letter or memo from your supervisor to the library, once your supervisor authorizes it

Note that you will need to apply for Convocation separately from your application to graduate.
