The newly reorganized Faculty of Applied Sciences has a new dean—UBC mechanical engineering professor and former department head, Nimal Rajapakse—who will take over from current dean pro tem, Ze-Nian Li, in September 2009. Rajapakse, who directs the Institute for Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems, is a global leader in the field of computational mechanics and solid mechanics. He has a B.Sc. (Hons) in civil engineering from the University of Sri Lanka (1977) and masters (`81) and doctoral (`83) degrees in structural engineering and mechanics from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok.
