The SFU senate has named Loyd McNicol (left), retired chartered accountant and director and co-trustee of the Earl and Jennie Lohn foundation, as this year's recipient of the chancellor's distinguished service award.

The award, to be presented at the SFU annual awards ceremony on Feb. 6, recognizes individuals outside the university community who have made a distinguished contribution to the province in areas in which SFU has a major interest or direct association.

Through his stewardship of the Lohn foundation, McNicol has supported SFU through gifts of more than $5.5 million. These donations have helped the city program in continuing studies, the Lohn lab for distance education, the Morris J.Wosk centre for dialogue, the TIME centre at Harbour Centre, and the cooperative education program.

In addition to his exemplary efforts on behalf of SFU, McNicol has also offered long service to the Arthritis foundation's board of directors.

Through the Lohn foundation, he has also assisted many causes including Burnaby Hospital, the Louis Brier Home, the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, the Jewish Community centre and the 411 Seniors centre.
