Nathalie Walsh joins the OFFA team at SFU as Coordinator of provincial network for teachers of french programs

The Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Nathalie Walsh as OFFA’s Coordinator - Provincial network for teachers of French programs in British Columbia.

Nathalie Walsh has been teaching for the last 25 years, mostly in the French Immersion and Core French programs in Surrey schools but also in England and France. After completing a bachelor’s degree in teaching French at secondary level at Université Laval, and a post-bac diploma in Second Language Teaching at SFU, Nathalie completed a Master of Arts, Curriculum and Development, at SFU’s Faculty of Education.

Over the course of her career, Nathalie strongly believed in pursuing her own professional development while exercising her leadership and contributing to the teaching community in various ways: she was a mentor for beginning teachers in her district and for SFU’s graduate studies program; she was a BCTF facilitator; she developed and taught week-long professional development programs for Core French teachers as part of SFU’s Bootcamp Francofun; and she presented at various provincial, national and international conferences. In 2017, Nathalie became a Faculty Associate at SFU where she was able to share her vast experience in the field with her cohorts of future French teachers.

In joining OFFA’s team, Nathalie will be responsible for creating and coordinating a provincial network for teachers of French programs (Core French, French Immersion and Francophone Programme) in B.C. She will also provide leadership to the provincial Alumni group “SFU Faculty of Education - J'enseigne en français”.  “The creation of this new position in the OFFA’s team is in line with the BC Ministry of Education action plan aiming to support the retention of teachers in French-language programs in British Columbia. We are delighted to have Nathalie join our team! Her multiple experiences in education, as well as her knowledge of the field are essential assets for the success of this new OFFA initiative” said Hélène Lalancette, Associate Director at OFFA.

OFFA’s mission is to coordinate, promote and support the development of programs and courses offered in French at Simon Fraser University. It also organizes scientific and cultural activities in the community in order to help promote a multifaceted and inclusive Francophonie.
