News from the OFFA team

It’s already the beginning of week #11 of remote working for SFU and the OFFA team!

We are getting ready for the June 11th Virtual Convocation Celebration, we are doing some planning for the fall semester (which, as you know, will be very special this year) and we are working on many new exciting projects, including a few that you will discover in the articles below.

With the current situation, please keep the following important information in mind:

  • The student lounge and OFFA offices remain closed until further notice.
  • The OFFA team can be contacted by email from Monday to Friday. Are you looking for a team member's email address? Visit the CONTACT US section of our website.
  • If you have general questions regarding the measures taken by SFU in connection with COVID-19, please consult SFU FAQ's page, which is updated on a regular basis.
  • We also encourage you to follow OFFA's FACEBOOK, TWITTER and INSTAGRAM pages if you want to hear from us a little more often. You will find articles and initiatives that inspire us in the current context.

NEW Bursaries for Postsecondary Studies in FSL Program

The Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC) launched on April 28th the new Bursaries for Postsecondary Studies in French as a Second Language Program aiming to encourage young, English-speaking Canadians to pursue postsecondary studies in French.

The program includes a total of 850 non-renewable bursaries, each worth $3,000, which will be awarded yearly from 2020 to 2023.

OFFA will be in charge of granting 90 of these bursaries to SFU students who are in a program taught primarily in French.

Under the slogan “It’s rewarding to be bilingual!”, the Program highlights the several benefits of pursuing postsecondary studies in French:

  • Achieving lifelong bilingualism
  • Opportunity to expand knowledge about the Francophone culture
  • Better employment opportunities
  • Improved wages

More details about the application process will be communicated to SFU students soon. In the meantime, we invite you to visit the FSL Bursary Program page for more information.

New series of online interactive workshops in education

This summer, OFFA will be offering a new series of online interactive workshops led by Monica Tang.

The series, entitled Identity and Interaction in L2, includes 4 workshops specifically developed for teachers whose French isn’t their first or dominant language, and who wish to gain more confidence in French.

While practicing French in a safe and supportive environment, participants will discover strategies to overcome the challenges of a L2 identity, both for themselves as teachers and for their students.

The online workshops are scheduled over 4 consecutive mornings, from 9:30-12:00, on July 20-23, as well as July 27-30.

There are only 15 spots per week, so we encourage teachers who are interested to register as soon as possible. Details and registration

10 reasons to choose the FCP, presented by current students and alumni

In April, the OFFA team usually welcomes all the Grade 12 students who have been accepted to the French Cohort Program for an information day on the Burnaby Campus.

Because of this year’s circumstances, we’ve asked 10 current FCP students and alumni to share, with Grade 12 students, the top 10 advantages of choosing this program.

We would like to thank everyone who accepted to be featured in this video (during isolation!) and who shared their FCP experience!
