Building Skills, Shaping Leaders

These experiential learning and skills development programs at SFU Beedie offer hands-on learning opportunities that help students develop practical skills in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Management Consulting Career Preparation Program (MCCP)

Founded in 2015 and in partnership with SFU Beedie’s Career Management Centre, the SFU Management Consulting Career Preparation (MCCP) program is a skill development program for SFU undergraduate business students who are interested in careers in Management Consulting—with an emphasis on strategy consulting or strategic functions of a company. As interviews for this field continue to be amongst the hardest interviews to pass, MCCP is designed to best prepare students to obtain and pass these multi-faceted and multi-level interviews. The program is a cohort-style model, where each year a very selective number of students are asked to take part after the application & interview process.

The program is a rigorous 10 week program, partaking each Summer throughout June and August. The program consists of lecture-based workshops and multiple firm visits for participants to get exclusive networking opportunities with some of the top global consulting firms. Participants are expected to dedicate roughly 10-15 hours in total a week to succeed in the program. Aside from regular sessions or firm visits, the cohort is expected to complete a minimum number of business cases with each other outside of the sessions. To learn more, please refer to the Program Structure page.

Past participants have landed multiple strategy or consulting-related positions in firms, and this network is continuing to grow.

Program structure

The program is set up for students to immerse themselves in learning on a weekly, intensive basis. This ensures that participants will be best prepared coming the Consulting recruitment period: full-time recruit starts in the Fall and internships range from Fall-Spring recruitment.

The first half of the program focuses on building a tool-kit and understanding the world of case interviews, and why it is important to succeed. The 4 overarching areas that are explored, developed, and refine are Analysis, Structuring, Communication and Business Acumen. Excelling in these 4 areas, on top of understanding different types of business cases, is paramount for this career. It is also important to understand and refine behavioural/fit interviews, which play a significant part in the interview rounds, and are often not given enough emphasis. These interviews will also be discussed with best practices.

The second half of the program focuses on firm visits and mock interviews. The firm visits are to create networking opportunities exclusively for the program participants, as well as a chance for participants to learn about the different firms outside of what is seen on paper. This is a chance for not only for firms to pick students, but for students to best understand how a firm differentiates itself from others. Mock interviews are planned to simulate a real interview, with either Alumnis or Consultants who have excelled in these interviews.

Outside of scheduled program times, participants are asked to do a minimum number of business case interviews, ranging from 25-30 to be recommended to firms and officially complete the program. This is primarily up to the scheduling of each participant. Roughly half of the minimum required cases will be organized for participants to do following the sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, where as the other half is the responsibility of the participant individually. This is done to not only ensure proper practice, but to also bring about a cohort model where participants can learn from each other throughout the summer.

We are always working to improve the program structure year-over-year and pay close attention to areas where the program is needed to improve from previous years. We believe that with constant improvement, we will ensure SFU students are continually polished for a career in consulting.

Students who succeed in both interview rounds will be invited to participate in the program for the year.

 Evaluation

As landing a position in this industry is very competitive (roughly less than 1% of applications advance to an offer), we balance the opportunity for students to get involved in this program with the requirements of the industry itself.

  • Academics – The industry benchmark is a 3.5 CGPA (~80%). It is preferred that applicants have an overall average at or above this benchmark, with strong performance in quantitative courses, however this is NOT the minimum cut-off.
  • Professional experiences – These experience(s) must show your aptitude for essential skills for a career in consulting, such as leadership, teamwork, analytical capabilities, relationship management, etc.
  • Extracurricular involvement – Involvement where you have went above and beyond, made an individual impact, and improved the community shows your ability to be a leader. Experiences such as case competitions, consulting experience (pro-bono or paid), presidency in student organizations, and sports are some examples of extracurricular involvement that are strongly considered.
  • Unique attributes – Consultants are not only high achievers, but come with an array of diverse attributes that sets them apart. Aside from being involved with professional and extracurricular activities, firms look at life experiences of applicants that make to provide a valuable, new perspective for clients. Most firms look for candidates that excel in other areas outside of business-related activities. What makes you different?

Past placements of participants
