SFU launches Data for Good

Simon Fraser University launched the Data for Good initiative in SFU’s Big Data Hub at the Burnaby campus. The Honourable Kim Pate, Senator from Ontario and SFU President Andrew Petter explained how big data’s power and potential can address pressing social and economic challenges facing Canada.

Social justice

Every Canadian deserves a fair chance, yet disadvantaged populations continue to be under-served. Applying advances in data analytics and modeling outcomes can help fill the gaps in Canada’s social infrastructure. SFU is breaking barriers to help address social justice challenges and improve well-being for these populations.

Opioid crisis

In 2017, there were almost 4,000 opioid-related deaths in Canada. 92 per cent of those deaths were accidental. At SFU, we partner with government, law enforcement and community service providers to put the power of advanced data analysis to work, pointing the way to breakthroughs in knowledge, prevention and treatment.
