Prerequisites: BISC 101 AND 102.

Course outline:

A general introductory course to Ecology.

Week 1: Introduction; what is ecology and what is the scientific method

Week 2-4: Adaptation and evolution. Abiotic factors and limits.

Week 5-8: Populations; Demography, growth and regulation. Behavioural ecology

Week 9-13: Communities; competition, predation and diversity.

Ecosystems; energy flow, biogeochemical cycles, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Required Text:

C. Krebs; Ecology: The experimental analysis of distribution and abundance

Grading:

Four midterms worth 25% each; no final exam
