DESCRIPTION:

The course will cover the following topics to introduce students to the unique biology of microorganisms as well as their importance to industry and medicine. Lecture topics complement the lab exercises (see below) and will include:

Applied problems in microbiology will be presented in the ever-popular Microbe-of-the-Week series.

REQUIRED TEXT:

Microbiology, Third Edition by L.M. Prescott, J.P. Harley, and D.A. Klein, Wm. C. Brown Publishers, 1996

LABORATORY COURSE:

The laboratory exercises familiarize students with basic techniques in microbiology, e.g. sterile technique, growing bacteria in liquid medium and on agar plates, methods for bacterial identification, coliform counting, ELISA, etc.
