Jim Hart's Red Cedar Dance Screen

Haida Chief and Master Carver Jim Hart spent three years salvaging red cedar from the Haida Gwaii wildfires for his latest creation, a large 16 by 11 foot dance screen. For fifteen months, Jim and his assistants, John Brent Bennett, Brandon Brown, Carl Hart, and Leon Ridley, have been working on the piece. The Bill Reid Gallery became their studio for 5 weeks during the summer of 2012, allowing visitors to experience the creation of this massive screen.

The screen and design depicted in these photographs belong to James (Jim) Hart who has graciously allowed us to document the carving process.
