How do I import Scantron data into Canvas?

The process for importing Scantron data into Canvas is changing. The interim process as of January 2017 is described below. If you have used the Scantron system previously, note that the only change occurs in step 1: rather than downloading Scantron data from a webpage, you now need to request the data from Document Solutions. For information on how to request Scantron forms and processing for your course, please see pds.docsol.sfu.ca/scanning or contact Document Solutions at docsol@sfu.ca.

Step 1. Upon request, Document Solutions will send you an email with an attachment called canvas.csv.

Open the canvas.csv file in Excel.

Your Scantron file should be formatted correctly to upload the file to Canvas. You should see six columns plus the exam column:

Step 2. Import your Scantron grades into Canvas.

Note: Although uploading your Scantron file to Canvas should not overwrite the gradebook, it is good practice to back up your gradebook before making any changes. To create a backup, follow the instructions here.

If you haven't already created a column in the gradebook for your Scantron data

When you upload your file to Canvas Grades, a new assignment column will be created with the exam grades.

  1. Go to your Canvas course.
  2. Click Grades in the navigation sidebar.
  3. Click Import on the righthand side.
  1. Choose the Scantron data file by clicking Choose File.
  2. Click Upload Data.
  1. From the dropdown menu, choose New Assignment (this means a new column will be created in the gradebook).
  2. Enter the maximum points possible.
  3. Click Continue. Please note if you have a large number of students, it will take a few minutes to create the column.

You will see a list of students being imported:

  1. Click Save Changes.

You will see the Exam column in your gradebook:

Please note that students will receive an immediate notification that their grade is available. If you do not want them to receive their grade right away, you can mute the assignment. See the instructions here.

If you have already created a column/assignment in the gradebook for your Scantron data

Make sure of the following:

  • the name of the column in the scantron spreadsheet matches the name of your assignment
  • you have set it as a no submission assignment
  • you have assigned the number of points.

When you upload your file to Canvas Grades, the grades will be uploaded into the assignment column you created. Do the following:

  1. Go to your Canvas course.
  2. Click Grades in the navigation sidebar.
  3. Click Import on the righthand side.
  1. Choose the Scantron data file by clicking Choose File.
  2. Click Upload Data.
