Assessing Financial Need for Non-Traditional Undergraduate Students
Presenter: Pam Goodwin, Dalhousie University
Pam Goodwin has been with Dalhousie University for 30 years in various roles with approximately 20 years in financial aid. She has experienced the increase in complexity of assessing financial need to best support students with their academic success, while trying to manage a limited budget. More recently she has been provided with the "greatest role ever" of Nanny to her 2 year old granddaughter!
Assessment of undergraduate financial need for scholarship and bursary purposes is becoming increasingly challenging. International students, new immigrants to Canada, children of small and medium business owners, and children of blended families all pose unique financial need assessment challenges. Whose income is considered, whose isn’t? How do you interpret income tax assessments that show a family living below the poverty line? We’ll explore these questions through a guided discussion and sharing of best practices.
