Game On!: Program Mentor

Inspire local youth to live healthy, active lives!

Would you believe that your kale and avocado obsession and #gymrat tendencies could help local youth? Lettuce tell you how!

Game On! is a program run by Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver that inspires boys to pursue healthy and active lifestyles. Game On! mentors are men who are enthusiastic about healthy, active living and enjoy working in a group setting to share their experiences and skills.

This program offers you a short-term volunteer opportunity where you will join other adult male volunteers for weekly 75-minute sessions for 7-8 weeks to provide boys with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices.

As a Game On! volunteer, you will help lead participants through fun, non-traditional physical activities, you will help provide information about healthy eating, and you will help facilitate discussions about emotional health. Your goal will be to encourage youth to pursue lifelong healthy lifestyles and to gain the life skills necessary to do so.

In this role, you will:

  • Acquire knowledge of the Game On! curriculum;
  • Provide effective leadership in program activities and discussions about physical activity, healthy eating, self-esteem and communication;
  • Facilitate inclusive group activities and games;
  • Demonstrate effective mentoring techniques, such as active listening, coaching, advising, and providing feedback.

Other benefits:

  • Gain experience working with youth;
  • Gain experience facilitating an afterschool program;
  • Gain demonstrable leadership and mentorship experience;
  • Earn credit on your co-curricular record.
