The Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award will be presented to community leader and SFU board chair emeritus and alumnus Chris (Syeta'xtn) Lewis at the Chancellor’s Dinner on Thursday, October 7 at 6:00 p.m.
Syeta’xtn has an extensive history of service and advocacy with the SFU community. First appointed to the SFU Board of Governors in 2014, he served as deputy chair before becoming chair in 2020. He was also co-chair of the university’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (SFU-ARC), which consulted broadly with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities to develop the ARC Final Report—a set of recommendations to guide the university in reconciliation.
As a dedicated community leader and an elected councillor of the Squamish Nation, Syeta'xtn also devotes his time to serving on several community boards.
Syeta'xtn’s passion for advancing reconciliation, diversity and inclusivity, and his willingness to share his cultural knowledge and support when needed, embody the spirit of leadership and community engagement that this award celebrates.
