Remembering Beedie School of Business Dean, Ali Dastmalchian a Message from our Executive Director

It’s with great sadness that we say good-bye our great leader, Ali Dastmalchian, Dean, Beedie School of Business, who passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2020.

Ali was not only a great champion of entrepreneurship and innovation, but also a change maker who empowered others and celebrated their accomplishments and successes (many which he quietly helped them to achieve). Under Ali’s leadership, Venture Connection officially came under the Charles Chang Institute umbrella and became part of the Beedie family, while continuing to support the entire SFU entrepreneurship community.

A statesman with the heart of a renegade, Ali pushed for change but perhaps more importantly removed barriers for those around him, making room for them to become leaders and change makers in their own ways, backing them and giving them space to learn. One of our colleagues said it very well. “A great leader gives you all the rope you need, and then when you get tangled, cuts you free, gets everyone to look and hands you some more rope”. She was talking about Ali. His example is one we should all strive to follow and his light will be greatly missed.

You can find President Andrew Petter’s heart-warming tribute to Ali here.

Remember to hug your loved ones and appreciate each day,
