John Thompson receives the 2018 CCUCC Chemistry Doctoral Award

Department of Chemistry alumnus Dr. John Thompson has received the 2018 CCUCC Chemistry Doctoral Award for research carried out at Simon Fraser University under advisor Prof. Daniel Leznoff. Sponsored by the Canadian Council of University Chemistry Chairs (CCUCC), the CCUCC Chemistry Doctoral Award is presented to recognize outstanding achievement and potential in research by a graduate student whose PhD thesis in chemistry was formally accepted by a Canadian university in the 12–month period preceding the nomination deadline.

While completing his PhD at SFU, John co-authored over 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and received both the 2017 Governor General's Gold Medal and the Faculty of Science Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award. His PhD thesis focused on the design of highly birefringent materials via the use of supramolecular chemistry techniques.

John gave his award lecture at the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition in Edmonton, AB, on May 29th, 2018.
